Service Hub for Bowen & Galilee basins

Rockhampton’s central location along major north, south and west transport freight infrastructure routes, its proximity to major mining and resource development, combined with its large customer base and labour force consistently drive growth and prosperity to the region.

With a diverse, resilient and stable economy, affordable cost of living for residents and businesses, a subtropical climate and a large regional airport providing connectivity, Rockhampton holds a number of critical enablers to further capitalise on opportunities and strengthen its economic diversity.

The Rockhampton Region has a 150-year connection with the resources and mining sector. This link started in 1858 with the Canoona Gold Rush and has continued to the present through the Region’s role as a major service centre for the Bowen, Galilee and Surat Basins.

There are over 40 coal mine sites within a 2-hour drive radius from the Rockhampton region, between Moura and Moranbah. Recent years have brought a resurgence in the mining industry, with several key acquisitions, expansions, new operators and new projects clearing approvals and entering production. There are some 30 advanced coal projects in Queensland, including 20 greenfield or new projects and 10 brownfield expansions. Of these, 25 are in the Bowen Basin and following the successful commissioning of Bravus Carmichael Mine, more developments are planned for the Galilee Basin over coming years.

With Rockhampton well positioned in terms of location, expertise and readiness as a key service hub, our region is positioned ideally as a destination of choice to do business in the resources and mining industries.

For business aiming to engage with the resources industry in Queensland, Rockhampton is an ideal location. Rockhampton Regional Council has strong partnerships with existing and planned mines.

Advance Rockhampton strongly supports emerging businesses through various training and development resources designed to assist suppliers to become part of the supply chain for major projects.
