Get out and get involved

While you’ll be studying and working hard, you’ll also need to unwind and have fun, and there’s many ways to spend time with friends around the Rockhampton region. Get out to one of our parks where you can walk, play, chill out on the grass and enjoy the great outdoors. Markets spring up nearly every weekend in our Central Business District and surrounds, or plan to take in one of the many and varied community events in arts, sports and recreation.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community, become more comfortable talking and interacting with Australians, and make new friends at the same time! The CQ Multicultural Association can put you in touch with people who need volunteers, be it for one day or longer.

Workshop and information sessions, if you have your own business idea Rockhampton Regional Council SmartHub helps individuals gain new skills and understanding of the business market-place. They offer events that are often free or low cost, and you may learn something to help your career.

The Art Gallery and the Rockhampton Regional Library are exciting places to visit and meet people with similar interests; they often have events and activities for all ages and interests. The North Rockhampton Library on Berserker Street also has a great collection and line up of events and activities.

See a movie at BCC Cinemas, they screen all the latest movies and frequently show independent movies in other languages. Going to the movies is an enjoyable way to practice listening to English – while eating popcorn of course!

Enjoy a variety of sports, ask your education provider what sporting options are available to you. There are also plenty of local sports clubs that will welcome you – you don’t have to be a good player, they cater for all levels of fitness and expertise. Joining a team is one of the best ways to make friends with locals, ask friends or look on Facebook for a club to join. Sports facilities like the Indoor Sports Arena are also a great way to get involved.

Eating out is a great way to build friendships. Rockhampton is home to a great variety of locally-owned ethnic restaurants spread all over the city, including Chinese, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indian and Indonesian, Thai, Mexican, Korean and fusion restaurants that feature the best of Australian and overseas cuisine.

Browse through our Community Calendar of all events, then plan to come along to enjoy the fun and activities.
