Resources & Mining
A destination of choice for the resources industry
The Rockhampton Region has a 150-year connection with the resources and mining sector. This link started in 1858 with the Canoona Gold Rush and has continued to the present through the Region’s role as a major service centre for the Bowen, Galilee and Surat Basins.
There are 35 coal mine sites within a 2-hour drive radius from the Rockhampton region, between Moura and Moranbah. Recent years have brought a resurgence in the mining industry, with several key acquisitions, expansions, new operators and new projects clearing approvals and entering production. There are some 30 advanced coal projects in Queensland, including 20 greenfield or new projects and 10 brownfield expansions. Of these, 25 are in the Bowen Basin.
With Rockhampton well positioned in terms of location, expertise and readiness as a key service hub, our region is positioned ideally as a destination of choice to do business in the resources and mining industries.
A Liveable Services Hub
Every mine needs to be serviced with not only operators and employees, but service providers in trades, equipment, technology providers, safety, engineering, contractors and more. Rockhampton’s capable businesses and residents meet this challenge, with Queensland Resources Council figures showing that the Rockhampton region currently accommodates 1,086 full-time resources industry employees, with $351 million spent on local goods and services in the 2017-18 financial year.
The region’s capability and capacity are ideal for relocation of families, with road, rail, and air networks making Rockhampton easily accessible – just an hour’s flight from Brisbane and less than 45 minutes’ drive to beaches. Our Region’s schools and educational institutions are world-class, with an abundance of options for primary, secondary and tertiary education. The Region also sets a standard in affordable living.
