A number of major defence projects are set to take place in the wider Rockhampton region, including the Australia Singapore Military Training Initiative (ASMTI) and the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area (SBMTA) Remediation Project.
The overarching $2 billion initiative will provide increased access to Australian military training areas for the Singapore Armed Forces. Laing O'Rourke has been appointed as the managing contractor for the ASMTI Facilities Project works at the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area. The approximately $1 billion in work is anticipated to commence by the end of 2019 and be delivered over five to six years.
Expressions of Interest for early works packages were released by Laing O’Rourke in May 2019, with an anticipated commencement in Q3 of 2019 and Q2 2020. Proposed works include roads, fencing, waste management, camp accommodation, associated engineering and site works and more.

The $135 million SBMTA Remediation Project is currently in design phase with Downer and FKG appointed as the managing contractor. The project involves improvements to key training facilities including airfields, urban training area, camp and access roads and is likely to commence in the second half of 2019 and be completed in 2022.
